This setting is reflected through the hardware LED so it def works. This means that setting the ADC to 96000 Hz is as simple as selecting the number from a pulldown box.

Probably best to dual boot before committing to Linux.Ī notable improvement with the Linux driver is it allows for arbitrary switching of sample rate through jackd. The wayback machine has some vague references that indicate partial success.

The Much of the online documentation around tests with this driver and various hardware is offline or a broken link.

Linux kernel drivers are provided through the ffado project, which exists for Firewire audio. The preceding code is very interesting in that it exposes what appears to be all the features of the device. MOTU is hostile towards Linux but that didn't stop us!. I discourage recording important things not considered ephemeral with this device. This can be thought of as "fullness" or "unpredictability" or maybe "warmth". It also makes noise at periodic intervals without user input. I think the firmware crashed though the analog components and the software driver continue to work. The non-backlit LCD screen displayed some hexadecimal numbers. This means the digital level meters began flashing in a regular pattern, all colors. Need more testing.Īs of Fri Mar 25 09:31: this device went into "xmastree mode". It appears that on Debian stable it works okay. The Linux driver from ffado is partially broken, in that the patch in the package on Debian testing fails and renders the unit inoperable. The LCD screen on the unit has a broken backlight.

I couldn't figure out how to get the S/PDIF or optical ports to do anything interesting, despite the Denon having both RCA and optical inputs. That said, the RME pres are clean and quiet, but boring and don't have the depth or class of say, the Mackie Onyx pres, (I use a John Hardy for a pre and am going to purchase an API soon), so there is no advantage there, IMHO over the MOTU.It has some impressive pro audio features circa 2004. Some folks are REAL happy with stock MOTU, some get mods.I like the RME clock converters better, and specification-wise, RME is better, but it comes down to sound, and with RME, the RME sound is my personal preference.

These kinds of things are largely preference based, but Black Lion does a LOT Of mods on these units.something to assess when deciding.ĭon't know if they do the clock mod anymore at Black Lion (I hear that they don't), but by the time you mod the motu to the converter/clock level of an RME, you might be in the expense territory of something better.again, a lot is preference, but if I were in your shoes, I'd buy as good a clock/converter as I could. Or pick one up on Ebay cheap to tide you over till the next gen stuff comes out. Its a great soundcard, but by the same token we are entering the world of VISTA etc it may be worth seeing what next gen stuff come out. The cue mix software is really useful, direct monitoring which is great, ie it makes low latency a non argument, record at the latency of your choice, and direct monitor at zero latency via the 828. Is is being run out ? - Doubtful, they have just brought out the 8pre which is there answer to the saffire.

will it run glitch free at 64 samples / 1.5ms latency - assuming a high power PC rig ? Woah, thats a very tall order, i think the only thing to say is i have not tested it yet, the only ansswer is theoretcially yes, to run that performance you will need a machine that is 64 bit and can use more than 3 gig of ram, so XP64 or Vista 64 and the 828 already has drvers for both OP's

good drivers ? I think the drivers are pretty good, ASIO are better than WDM in my opinion, so if you desperatly want WDM that could be a deal breaker. However i have about 17 usb things, would not want my soundcard to try and share with that lot. is the Firewire unit *better* than the USB 2.0 unit ? i have not compared, but I would go firewire purely because its easier to isolate firwire on an IRQ than USB, ie on my machine the only firwire things are the 828 and my liquid mix, they have both got seperate IRQ's and Seperate PCI card. If Pre's are your main thing i would say have a look at the Saffire. good pre's ? THe pre's are okay, i have used them for a lto of stuff and they are good, I also have an octepre and i tend to favour that for vocals. well built ? Yes its very well built in my opinion i have it in a rack and have used it for mibile recording its still going well. Right lots of questions I will go through in order
